The French Brittany AKA (Epagneul Breton) is a close working bird dog with an excellent nose with natural pointing and retrieving abilities.
Once while hunting in heavy cover, my French Brittany and I had lost visual contact for a bit. But during this time, she had come across a bird and had gone on point and began waiting for me. When we regained visual contact again, I discovered she had begun looking for me and immediately went back on point—it was as if she was saying, “Where have you been, I have been waiting for you?”
The French Brittany has been a pure joy for me to work with train and hunt beside. Their intelligence and desire to please you make hunting an extremely enjoyable experience.I find watching them hunt and work in the field is far more rewarding than bagging the bird.
I had not hunted much as a youth but discovered the French Brittany when I was in my early 40’s. I found that this style of hunting dog fits well with young as well as older hunters. The close working and checking back that occurs with this breed makes hunting an enjoyable experience rather than an athletic work out.
They are easy to housebreak and true joy in the home. They love to sit on your lap even in their old age. I guess they think that they are still a puppy. Our French Brittany’s are the king and queen of our outdoor furniture. They are often found sitting or sleeping on them, especially on sunny days.
In the summertime, they love to run onto the dock, swim in the lake, and jump into the fishing boat. They are a wonderful fishing buddy and get as excited about a lunker largemouth as you do!
The French Brittany may be a world-renowned hunting dog for their nose, natural pointing instincts, and trainability. But they are so much more than just a hunting dog. They are your hunting partner, your pickup’s co-pilot, and your rocking chair companion. There is no better addition to the family than a French Brittany.
